Benefits and Allowances

Maltese residents, including long-term expats with the proper residency status, may be eligible for a range of government benefits and allowances provided through Social Security and other state agencies. These benefits include child benefits, sickness and disability allowances, maternity and paternity leave, unemployment support, and pensions for those who have contributed to the national insurance system. Families with low incomes or dependents may also qualify for supplementary allowances and rent subsidies. Healthcare is publicly funded and largely free for residents registered under the national system. To access most benefits, individuals must have a social security number, be contributing to National Insurance (NI), and meet residency or employment requirements. Expats are encouraged to register early and understand their entitlements, as eligibility may vary depending on nationality and type of residence permit.
